《西南国防医药》杂志是成都军区卫生部主管，成都军区医学科学技术委员会主办的综合性医学学术刊物。创刊于1973年，创刊时刊名为《资料汇编》，为不定期刊物，刊载内容以医学临床专题讲座、综述为主。1979年更名为《医学资料汇编》，定期季刊出版，刊载内容较以前有了很大改变，主要以科研课题论文、临床研究论文为主。1985年原昆明军区与成都军区合并后，改名为《西南部队医药》，仍为季刊。1991年经解放军总政治部和国家新闻出版署审查批准《西南部队医药》更名为《西南国防医药》（双月刊），在国内外公开发行，是全军各大军区、军兵种主办的同类期刊中第一个公开发行的医学刊物。2000年经国家科技部科技信息研究所审查批准，《西南国防医药》被收录为中国科技论文统计源期刊，列为国家科技核心期刊。2009年1月经解放军总政治部和国家新闻出版批准，《西南国防医药》改为单月刊，是全军同类期刊中第一本月刊。目前，《西南国防医药》已被美国化学文摘（CA）、波兰哥白尼索引、英国国际农业与生物科学研究中心及中国科技论文统计源等国内外十余个主要期刊数据库收录，是万方期刊网、清华学术光盘版、中文科技期刊数据库全文上网期刊，是国家级核心刊物，也被多个省（市、区）列为A类期刊，作为晋升高级专业技术职务的认可刊物。《西南国防医药》以传递医学科技信息、加强学术交流、促进医学科学技术发展为宗旨，以各类医务人员为主要读者对象。辟有专家论坛、论著、临床研究、高原医学、中医•中西医结合、护理园地、医院管理、卫勤研究、基层卫生、综述•讲座等栏目，集学术性、技术性及实用性为一体，具有军事医学和高原及亚热带疾病防治等特色。
